Can't Start - No fuel in cylinder

This is an update to a previous query on my '85 9.8.

I now have good, blue and snapping spark on both cylinders.

I have 115 psi in each cylinder.

I have a cleaned and blown carburetor.

Carb bowl fills (audibly) when tank is primed.

After 4-5 pulls with choke on, gas will leak from front of carb when choke is released.

Plugs are dry after several (maybe 20) pulls without so much as a sputter.

So, gas all the way to the throat of the carb but dry plugs and no start.

Any thoughts - please? I need a direction to go from here.

Cheers

You have a problem with the carb. It needs to be taken apart and cleaned properly then reassembled using new gaskets, needle and seat. Be sure to check the float and make sure it isn't leaking or soaked with fuel (cork type). The make sure it is adjusted properly.

Is this in a barrel? Sometimes I find I have to pull the tilt pin to straighten the motor out while running in a barrel, especially Mercury motors, worth a shot.

Will it even "pop off"? Your sure that you put the spark plug leads back on the correct cylinder?

Re: Can't Start - No fuel in cylinder

Thanks for the replies.

I did do a carb rebuild already. Float is metal and adjusted to level (carb upside-down). Gaskets are new. Took it apart the other day and blew high pressure air through all jets.

I would definitely like to see a wiring diagram to see if the wires from switch box to coils and coils to plugs are correct. Someone else (family) had a kick at this motor a few years ago and replaced the recoil. In the process, they removed the wiring to the coils.

That said, there still does not seem to be any gas in the cylinders. Plugs are all but dry.

Will try removing the tilt pin but I had the same trouble trying to start while mounted to a boat transom.

If you are getting spark then it's not a wiring issue, could JD561 said above , plug leads reversed, what about the flywheel key, is it in good shape?

Re: Can't Start - No fuel in cylinder

1) Check the trim pin position such that the carb is LEVEL and not tilted forward.

2) If it has been such a very long time since this motor has ran it is possible that the crank seal between the cyl's has dried and may not be sealing well enough for crankcase vacuum to pull all its air thru the carb, it may be pulling air from the other crankcase.

Spray pre-mixed fuel into the intake, attempting to 'flood' the upper cyl so as to 'wet' the crankcase seal.

Remove the spark plugs and spray an small amount of fuel directly into each cyl. reinstall plugs and try starting. A back fire here would indicate the plug wires are reversed.

Thanks for the tips. I will check the key and try all above suggestions over the next few days and report back.

I have tried putting in a few ml. of fuel in each cylinder already and get the odd backfire. Switched the wires, and still just the odd 'Puff!'

Re: Can't Start - No fuel in cylinder

Alright

I removed the carb again and searched and cleaned all jets and holes with carb cleaner, some dental tools (that work at getting in the micro passages) and high pressure air. Confirmed float is seating well and level.

I took apart the fuel pump and made sure all gaskets are in correct order. I traced the way the vacuum from the carb throat operates the diaphragm and it seems sensible that it is working.

Flywheel key looks good and in place. This flywheel has never been removed. Still had seal from factory.

I can get a 'snuff' when I put gas in the cylinders (though I am not sure how much I should use).
I used parts diagrams to confirm all parts are still there and in proper order. If this motor never ran in front of me I wouldn't be as convinced this is a minor issue.

The answer will be a head slapper I'm sure.

Any more ideas anyone?

Check ignition timing at WOT

Too far off and it won't hardly even fart.

Thanks Charlie

Would timing effect the intakes ability to draw gas in as the plugs remain all but dry?

I read the article in Freq-asked-questions and much of it is over my head. I have no timing light to start with and I am not familiar with some of the terms.

I am a garage hobby mechanic for the past few months - certainly no pro but trying my best to use logic to crack this one.

Any help appreciated.

Should not effect it, regardless of the timing is still can draw fuel into the cylinders.
Now reeds, they have everything to do with fuel induction on a 2 stroke.

Re: Can't Start - No fuel in cylinder

Well, I switched around the wires that lead to the coils (+ to - and vice versus) from the switch box and actually had a 2 second start up. I got this to happen a half dozen times (with plenty of pulling) and then noticed the black neoprene (fuel) line that leads from the bottom front cylinder to the top cylinder was leaking badly. Cracked all over.

I replaced it with a piece of silicone aquarium tubing (temporary) and got a few more puffs and sputters ... then nothing but a sore arm. Could see air and fuel bouncing up the clear tubing whenever I pulled.

Hmmm ...

Air in that fuel line is an indication that the fuel pumps are still sucking air into the fuel system.

GOT TO find that leak.

Thanks Charlie

I will try to make a little video of what I have happening so far and put it on youtube in case I am not explaining things correctly.

If a picture is worth a 1000 words, a video must be worth at least ... 1001.
