Can't shift into forward gear - 1985 Force 50 hp

I have been having trouble shifting into forward gear for some time now. At first it was a little jumpy getting into gear, but now it just won't shift. I push the gear shifter forward and it just seem to rev up higher and higher but won't go forward. I have tested it ouside the water using a hose and it seems to spin the prop just fine. When it gets into the water, no dice.

I had a mechanic look at the problem and he said it was probably the clutch (clutch dog, I assume from reading other posts) but he said when he drained the lower unit grease he didn't see any metal, so he abandoned that theory and did some work on the shifting box (which does work better now).

I assume I am going to have to be the one to drop this lower unit and check the clutch dog myself. I have very little mechanic experience and no experience on outboard motors. I am hoping you guys will help me, if you think it is worth my time to try this. I will purchase a manual today if someone thinks this is a job I can do on my own, or should I just sell and take a loss?

Please let me know if you need more details. Thanks in advance.

If the gearcase is the 2 piece...old chrysler style..you should have no probs with it.

DIY's buy parts from us all the time with that style of gearcase.

TMD

Thanks for the info TMD. How can I tell if it is the 2 part kind? Also, do you know what tools and supplys I will need? I priced forward gears on the net and it looks like the part will run $250-$300 alone. Does that sound right?

One other question: At first I thought it might also be the linkage, but it shifts into reverse without a problem, so it can't be the linkage, right?

The cases will split right above the P/S

And judging by the year...it will be the old style Chrysler gearcase. (2 piece)

You might check to see if the Retainer nuts for the shift shaft have backed themselves off.

Shift shaft is located in front of the mid housing. You may have to remove the mid housing to check. 6 flathead screws.

And yes the parts will be around that price...I am not at work right now, so I cannot give you an actual price.

TMD

Found some prices for you.

These will be Canadian $249.20 Frwd Gear
$69.60 Clutch
$20.65 Seal Kit
$65.75 Waterpump Kit

So if you are paying American $

You would have to work out the exchange...so the parts would be considerably less.

I believe we have them in stock.

Email me for further details @

marinedoctor@shaw.ca

TMD

Got the boat back from the mechanic last night. They replaced the clutch dog and forward gear just like TMD said. Everything works great now. The prices for the parts were right in-line with what TMD said they would be. It is a great feeling to know what to ask the mechanics to do and how much it should cost rather than having to guess at the problem then feeling like you were taken advantage of after you get the bill. Thanks to everyone else who commented. I bought a manual and plan to do the service work on the engine myself from now on, so look for more posts to come I'm sure! :D
