Can't shift after water pump installation

After installing a new impeller in my water pump on my outboard, I can't get it to shift. I have a 1975 65 HP mercury. It went back together fine bolted up but does not shift. If I spin the prop it will only click. Let me know what the deal is, thanks.

Did you reconnect the the shift rod?<br />If so what position was the shifter in when you connected it?

You will have to take the lower unit back off and re-install. Pay particular attention to the position of the shift handle, the shift rod, and the shift rod in the lower unit. It must be in the gear(s) indicated in your manual to get it to work properly.
