Can't reassemble ball & spring in throttle unit

I have a 1977 Johnson 85 hp. Starter keeps sticking (won't turn off). In the process of troubleshooting the problem, I opened the throttle control to get to the ignition. A small silver ball bearing rolled out. The spring holds the ball bearing against the shift lever, and holds it in neutral, reverse or forward.

For the life of me, I can't figure how to get this re-assembled!!! Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I figured out where the ball goes, but the problem is re-assembling. There doesn't seem to be a way to hold the ball against the spring while putting the lever assembly back on.
