Cant push choke in without high idle

Hi,
I just recently purchased a boat. The boat has a 2008 Tohatsu 5hp outboard. I have taken the boat out once before and had no real complications. Today I went to use my boat and as usual it started on the second pull. The problem I am having is the motor revs really high and rough if I push the choke in at all. I tried letting it idle for 25 minutes thinking maybe it needed to warm up and would try pushing the choke in little bit at a time and I couldn't get the choke passed half way without the engine reving extremely high. Any suggestions before I take it to a mechanic?

thanks

I take it you have an MFS5A2 or a 5B. (Model is everything, year is no matter.)

Check the throttle cabling for proper routing and tension, and verify that the high-idle cam on the top of the carb is allowing the idle to come down as the choke is disengaged.

If it's a 2 strokes, probably sucking air somewhere ? Spark plug has nothing to do with high idle.

Hi

thanks for the replies the mod# is MFS5B5-5. I am going to try to replace the spark plug since that is easy and will report back.
