Just bought 1995 bayliner jet jazz, previous owner said didnt have pickup, and wouldnt plane. have since changed plugs, fuel pump, fuel filter. had problems starting in water, but fired on land. So I pulled carbs and cleaned and replaced them. Question: is it a good idea to use water hookup on top of cylinder head? This is my first boat so I dont know a thing. I noticed small leak on top carb bowl. But anyway, got it to idle finally but dies when u jam it not slowly open them up at the carb throttle. Some one help me figure this out before I blow it up and go back to my PWC.

The water hookup on top of the cylinder head may be the flushing adaptor (salt water, silt, etc.) but you can't run off of it. The engine needs a moderate amount of water from the hose in the rear of the engine that runs from the head to the jet pump. Disconnect the hose at the jet pump, attach a flared fitting and a garden hose adapter (both available at any hardware store) and run a garden hose to the adapter. Water will flow into the head and down out the exhaust, and out the rideplate. It is important to have water flow through the exhaust to carry away unburned gasses. These gasses can explode and 'sneeze' the ride plate loose. If that happens, you won't be able seal your jet pump and get any speed.

If it won't fire on water, make sure you are using the surface gap plugs and that your timing is good.

good luck,
fp
