I just bought my first boat to go fishing with my son. I'm new to boating and fishing but came across what I thought was a decent deal. I have a 61 Texas Maid Ski Jet with a 1965 33 hp Evinrude
I have been able to get the motor running and I can get it to shift into reverse neutral and forward. The problem is It will not go any faster than a slow trolling speed ??
Any help is greatly appreciated. I would like to get some fishing in before they push the huts out onto the ice. Lol

Is it a tiller or do you have remote controls? Have you removed the cowel and checked to see if the throttle linkage is moving the carb linkage to open the throttle plate in the carb? Have you checked the spark, is it firing on both cylinders?

It has controls and not sure what the cowel is , the spark is good and compression is 105 both cylinders
Do I need to remove the carburetor to check the linkage ?
Thxs for the help This is not my element

No problem, the cowel is theengine cover. Remove it and have someone operate the the control lever, look inside the carb with a flashlight and see if the throttle plate is opening up. If so, since you have good spark and compression, you will most likely have to overhaul the carb. Your carb has two adjustable needle valves, top is low speed bottom is high speed, you might try opening the bottom needle valve a 1/4 turn.

Running on one cylinder? Check for spark and do a cylinder balance test. While at a fast idle remove one plug wire at a time. The engine should slow down roughly equally. If it dies, the other plug/cylinder is not contributing.
