trying to replace the water cover gasket and thermostat, all screws removed, but cover is not coming off, I would think not to pry it off, tried rubber malot
would a heat gun be useful? any other Ideas to free the cover? looks like it hasn't been off since 1979 when it was built.

Try using an old but strong putty knife like you would use a chisel. Start the blade between the cover and the block and tap it in with your mallot, move it over a lttle and do it again. Keep doing this all the way around the cover and you will break the old seal without putting any pressure on the cover or the block.

great idea, that will work, guess I should use the gel seal II on the cover, thinking I should also replace the head gasket too, does the head gasket need the gel seal II also? , I'm reading also some use locktite 518 in place of evindudes gel seal

Gel seal is an anaerobic sealer, metal to metal - used for crankcase halves. It's not appropriate at all for sealing gaskets. A good all-around gasket sealer is 3M 847.

the 3m 847 temp range is -40 to 180 deg F , wouldn't the 180deg f be too low? for the cover?

Another name for the Sealing compound by OMC is Loctite Aviation.
This from product specs:

Loctite ? Aviation Gasket Sealant, slow-drying, non-hardening brushtop sealant approved for use in aviation as well as automotive applications. Temperature range -65 ?F to 400 ?F; resists gasoline, oil and grease.
