Can't Get MAX RPM'S

I've got a 1986 225hp Johnson and all i can get is 5000rpm max. This just started doing this because 2weeks ago it would run at 5500rpms max. Please help! Thanks

Howdy FAI.<br /><br />Rather than pleading for help, it would help us a lot if you did a little preliminary investigation and gave us more to work with.<br /><br />Are all cylinders making power?<br />Do all cylinders have spark?<br />What happens if you squeeze your primer bulb?<br /><br />Let us know.<br /><br />Good luck.

Hey Jb I got the things you wanted. Compression is 100-104 on all cyl's. I tried pumping the primer bulb and it did not change anything and it was really stiff when pumping. I have spark on all cyl's. I put fresh gas in and i'm about to clean the oil tank. I still don't understand why one day i could hit 5500 and now i can't get anything over 5000. I'm going to change plugs when i do oil tank cleaning. Thanks for the help.

Hi, FAI.<br /><br />Hmm. Good spark to all six. Pumping the primer doesn't help. Perhaps we have one high speed jet plugged, perhaps we have one plug not firing under load.<br /><br />We still need to find out if the problem is fuel or spark related, though it could be reed related.<br /><br />Try spraying extra fuel into each carb throat while running under load.<br /><br />No change? Try pulling each plug wire, in turn. Then running her up again. If running on five is slower than you have been getting, that is a good cylinder. If you still get to 5000 with a plug wire off, you have found a bad cylinder.<br /><br />Let us know what you find.
