Last week i was finally able to get my 1985 Evinrude 140 running. However the tilt button no longer works properly. I use to be able to raise and lower the motor with it. Now it will only lower the motor.

Where should i start looking to fix this problem?

The entire box piece with the shifter doesnt look to be in the best condition and I do want to replace it. I was thinking that it might be possible the tilt switch is/went bad. Any help is appreciated.

Hi nivram.
Have you checked the relays? Look on the back of the motor for a little black box. Should be two screws holding the lid on. inside there are two relays. One for up and one for down. Swap them and see if will raise. If it does, just replace the relay.

well if the pump runs on the down side it means you have power, so its probably the switch, or a relay so first check them and see what happens, and then you'll have to go from that. if it isn't the switch you'll have to ckeck for broken wires, bad connections, ect..

Thanks you guys are great!

Is it possible to replace the box that that the throttle lever attaches to? I'd like something newer and better looking. The old one just looks well old. I was told i could probably pick up one of these with the throttle cables for $150. I need to replace my throttle cables anyhow so this wouldnt be to bad.

The latest Bass and Walleye Boats magazine has an article on fixing trim systems, along with wiring diagrams.

nivram
You would want to replace the entire control box, which all come with a new lever. There are many styles at West Marine or Cabelas. Look them up on the internet to check them out or you may find a newer style that will work on E-Bay.
