hi all, got my self a little project to work on not to long ago. 1990 Bayliner Capri with an L-drive. Mostly cosmetic stuff except the engine was missing the flywheel and starter.

so i got a new starter last week and today the flywheel came in (used off ebay).

i am trying to put the flywheel on except something is not fitting properly and i cannot slide the flywheel over the stator.

Looking all around everything it looks like everything should fit. But it seems to be getting stuck somewhere.

I know you have to use a puller to get the flywheel off, but do i have to use the puller to put the flywheel back on so it sits perfectly centered? i lined the flywheel up with the flywheel key and used a block of wood and hammer to try and knock it back on but not luck.

I think it is getting stuck on the trigger.

Any Thoughts?

I think it is getting hung up on these to spots, i measured the diameters the best i could and it should have 1/16" clearance still

Re: Cant get fly wheel on L-Drive

You have the wrong flywheel. Here is a picture of the flywheel that you need. Note that the top of the flywheel is flush. Later model flywheels have about a 1/2" lip around the center hole and is internally threaded. This will not work. You need one that has the 6 separate magnets without a lip around the center hole.

Here is a picture of the late model that also has the 6 separate magnets that will not work. Note the internally threaded lip around the center hole. The center hole is also larger in diameter. That's why this one will not work.

Thanks you just saved me a trip to the mechanic.

I am assuming they no longer make those flywheels, any ideas on where i can find one? it is the same flywheel used on the force outboards of the same years, correct?

That one says its for a 1992 outboard, i asked the guys to take a oic of the other side to see if it has 6 magnets. Not sure if it is the right one

That engine has a Mercury ignition. Force was made with a couple of ignition types. You need to specify a flywheel for a Mercury /Force ignition.
