Can't get bearings off trailer

I have a small boat trailer that was imported from taiwan (1993). Both tires have play in them but they don't get hot after a 180 mile drive. I pulled the cotter pin and removed the big nut to get to the bearings but they won't slide off like i was expecting. Both wheels are the same...the hub moves in and out about 1/8 inch but i couldn't even bang them off with a sledgehammer. I thought about paying about $100 for a puller, but i have a feeling that i might need to replace the whole axle. The axle is only about 12 inches long. It attaches to an open channel. Should i try a puller or are the bearings not designed to come off?

upload them to a site like photoshop or imageshack, and they will give you a url which you can post here.<br /><br />I agree pictures would be helpful.....normaly you can use the wheel as leverage and pull it towards you to get the outer bearings out.

i would block the trailer up, and take a 2lb. sledge hammer, rotating the hub and drive it off from the back. the worst that can happen is you buy a new axle. try spraying some PB blaster in there first.

You can check with some of your local parts supply stores and see if they loan/rent a puller like this .

I think its just stuck it looks like a normal bearing setup.<br /><br />Dont use the BFH it will become junk.<br /><br />I will bet with a puller from a rental place it will almost come off buy hand <br /><br />tommays
