cant find the serial number on my 1978 mercury 1150 outboard

im trying to find the serial number for my 1978 mercury 1150 outboard, for insurance purposes. they cant insure the boat without it and im getting pissed off looking for it. any help will be greatly appreciated.

There should be a data plate on the transom bracket. If not, look on the block for a frost plug. It's usually stamped on there as well.

You could go to one of the web sites that list Mercury parts for the 1978 115 and pick a number off the list and give it to them.

It's normally on the side of the transom bracket or on the front of the tilt tube assembly right below where the steering arm attaches.

If it's been removed, it could be that the motor was stolen at some time in the past and you could be in possession of a stolen motor.
