hi, i have a '96 polaris 750 that needs work. i live in northern nj and cant find ANYONE to work on this ski. they all claim they dont work on them anymore and cant get parts. any suggestions??

also,
if its impossible to find someone to work on it, i'm just going to buy another used pwc around the same year. yamaha, sea doo, and kawasaki are going to be my options because service is available. out of these 3, is there one i should avoid? thanks in advance!!

Re: cant find service

What are you tryign to do. I used to work on polaris a lot ( well all the other ones Yamaha sea doo and kawi)when I used to work for a Jet ski shop. if youre looking for somethign stick to yamaha and kawi. Sea doos unelss you know what youre doing are a handful.

Re: cant find service

well, one of the pistons is shot. it has a hole in it probably from running too lean or something. so i need to have it taken apart & piston replaced. i'm not sure if its a major project or not?
Rob454: at the moment, i'm actually looking at a '96 Kawasaki 750 ZXI or '96 Yamaha wave blaster 760. both around the same price. which one would you go for if i do go this route?
thanks!

Re: cant find service

I would go for the Blaster. they handle really well and have decent power. You can mod either ski but I know if you get crazy with the 760 the rear cylinder tends to blow. The Kawi is decent also. Either one of those skis should be very reliable. I would prefer the blaster but Im more of a yamaha guy. The kawi isnt a bad one either. See if you can ride either ski ( In fact i would insist on riding before purchase) See which one you like better. if youre tall the kawi will have a uncomfortable riding position. Im 6 01 and I rode ZXIs and the seat is low sompared to the foot wells so your knees are high up. just feels funny to me. If you leave it stock youll most likely have 0 problems. The only thing I woudl do ( actually with any 2 stroke ski) is get rid of the oil injection and go premix. little more of a PITA to fill up but youll always know the motor is getting oil.

The polaris will most likely need to be taken apart and rebuilt. The rebuild is really not that hard. Since you already bought it you may as well fix it and run it. I would look at proX pistons. Wisecos tend to ( IMO) seize motors unless you give them plenty of sidewall clearance. I didnt liek wisecos in my Raider so I took them out and went to proX. If you have all the parts the rebuild might take you a couple of hours. i usually take a little time cause I chase all the threaded holes and clean this and that. if the cylinder walls arent scored you may jsut need to replace the bad piston. I woudl take it apart and replace the crank seals ( might as well since youre so far in it now) The reason the piston failed is due to fuel starvation. You need to t tap the feed lines on the carbs ( feed side) and restrict the fuel return. You can also use a Yamaha 1100 fuel pump. your fuel pump may need rebuilding also. ( all it is is a bunch of plastic diaphrams that shrink up with age)
I have written a what to look for when purchasing a used jet ski and a pre ride post ride checklist. It should be on the SBT website. I do not work for SBT. the web master there bryan asked me if he can put the how to I wrote on their web site so anyone can look at it. i had no problem with that.

Re: cant find service

well i actually just found a marina that will work on it, 30 phone calls later haha. unfortunately, the place is a good 2 hour drive and they didnt want to give me a price over the phone to have it rebuilt until they look at it. what would be a ball-park $ estimate to have this engine rebuilt? to my understanding, this ski isnt worth much to begin with, and most importantly, i want to make sure they're not going to rip me off since i have no clue about pwc...
thanks again, and sorry for all the questions

you may want to just part the ski out since there are a lot of people buying used parts and just pick up a good used ski that won't start off needing a new engine. You will be spending a thousand dollars on rebuilding an engine for that ski or even more, it's probably not the best way to go.
