the boat is a 88 . cant find any tags on the motor to identify it. the two plates on the bracket are not there. is there a hidden spot on the engine to help me identify it ?
it appears i am looking for a number starting with 90 and maybe 4 letters after it ?

The motor would have left Yamaha with a round decal on the block. Usually in the vicinity of the starter motor. Has some numbers on it. What are they?

Look at the CDI assembly. What numbers/letters are on it?

Check the starboard( right) side of motor bracket….right near the transom for a date of manufacture plate….

Either find the round decal or get the numbers and letters from the CDI assembly or the carburetors.

no sticker or bracket label.
the only other numbers we find is y-3 688h 04. it appears the letter y designates year 2000 in a full part number like c90ty as both sides of the motor have either y-2 or y-3. will be checking the carb numbers today.

Where are you seeing the y-3 688h 04?

The y if not on the PID label on the does not mean the year 2000.

The only markings that count at this point in time are whatever is found on the CDI assembly and the carburetors.

Over here at least…the year can be told by the letter that’s down the bottom right corner of the serial tag plate. Letter on its own bottom right.

Are you talking about the letter P in the illustration below.

why would anyone know where you are calling here?
Why are you bothering to reply with such a silly and rude comment ?
There are at least two charts that tell us the year of these, going by the number in bottom right. It depends on where you live (or where the engine was supplied) .as to what chert to use.

Do you have a link to those charts please?

For Yamaha motors distributed by Yamaha USA, the letter in the lower right hand corner is irrelevant. The letter P means nothing to a user.

The fourth letter in the USA model code denotes the model year. For example, using the F225TXRC above, the letter C means that it is a 2004 model year motor. An F225TXRD would be a 2005 model year motor.

Yamaha USA stopped using model years after 2005. There were F225TXR's issued in 2006 thru 2010. All using the same model identity.
