I have a 60 horse Mariner that I acquired last year. It runs well with the exception of an idle problem that comes and goes. Some days it idles fine, some days it idles rough but it is not much of a problem because I don't idle much. I move from one place to another and fish. It also seems to run fine at high, medium and low speeds. Now here is my question. I keep reading about decarbing the engine but it appears there are pros and cons on this procedure. I don't know the history of the motor so I dont know if it has ever been decarbed or not( it is a 1980 model) so do I or do I not

Ahoy.

I never harms an engine to do a decarb procedure if it doesn't need it.

Failing to do one when it does need it condemns the engine to an early grave.

The debates are about when and how, not if.
