Cannot get outdrive to go down/in?

My 1977 silverline outdrive will not go in/down. I have filled the pump with oil and it still will not go down. This boat has three switches to control the trim. If I loosen a line on the trim cyls oil will come out and the drive will go down. Once its down I can use the controls on the boat and it will go up like it should, make a laboring noise when it has hit the end of its stroke. I then press the in button and you can hear the pump run but it will not go down. The pump just runs and runs but it will never pick up its prime. It does not labor like the return oil cannot return, it just runs fast as if there is no oil to prime itself. Ive been working on it for 2.5 hrs and still have gotten nowhere. The worst part is it used to work flawlesly last year and now it doesn't work at all?

Thanks for any advice

Is the engine in your 1977 Silverline also a 1977? if it is, I'll post up a link to the manual... Plenty of help in that.... Actually, better if you post the engine and drive serial numbers... That way I'll be sure to get the right manual to you....

As far as I know it is all original, as far as the serial numbers I don't have them handy right at the moment.

OK.. for 1977 there is only one manual, covers everything from 1974-1977...

Manual #2

Check in the front of the manual, there is a list of engines and serial number ranges, make sure you have the right one. If you don't, come back with the serial numbers and I'll find the right one.

Here is my drive serial # 4680382. I took another look at it this morning and noticed there is a 3 wire plug below the trim motor in the valve. What are these wires for or do. Thanks

Do you have one or two solenoids on your trim pump?
You say you have 3 switches for trim, is that a 3 button panel like this? 3button.jpg

Re: Cannot get outdrive to go down/in?

After reading through the manual a bit I am starting to think there is something wrong with the pump control valve. The trim motor runs when I press the in button so the electrical must be ok. I removed a hose at the trim cyl this morning and noticed there was very little pressure from the pump for the lowering circuit. The pump must be ok because it has to work harder to raise the drive up rather than lower it down and it will raise it up just fine. Does the trim motor switc directions to pump oil to lift then switch to lower or is that controlled in the valve ? Thanks

Re: Cannot get outdrive to go down/in?

My did the same thing. I removed the ram end caps and pulled out the shafts. There is a collar about where the end cap screwed on that is supposed to slide up and down on the shaft but water can corrode and create enough friction the "in" or trim down will not work but the motor will sound like it is working. The collar has on "o" ring on the outside and two on the inside, usually the outer inside "o" gets brittle and fills with corrosion. Replace that "o" ring and use emery cloth on the inner surface around the area where the outer "o" ring was. Spray oil on the shaft and test fit so it will slide before reassembly. That should fix your problem if it is corrosion related.

Thanks for the advice bently, but I do not believe the trim cyls are a problem. I dosconnected them from the outdrive and they still will not retract. I did blow air into both cyls and they did both extend and retract. I am on my way to remove the pump valve assy, which looks like it might be a difficult task.

Re: Cannot get outdrive to go down/in?

I checked the pump pressure with a gauge and one port has 2400 psi and the other won't give a reading on my 3000 psi gauge. Is there someplace to get a pump or do I have to go used? Thanks
