I have 1972 Trisonic with JX-245 OMC . I just bought it and started looking at starting it in the driveway to do some maintenace and realized the fake alake will not fit over the area on the bottom that the water comes in. It is screened and has really large hole. Does anybody have an alternative way of cooling the engine.

Maybe if you have a fire hydrant on your lawn you could rig something up.
Is it a Berkley jet? I think with those you can find the hose that supplies water to the engine from the propulsion impeller and just attach a garden hose there.
I'm also thinking it is hard on some jet drives to be run dry. For a 1 minute test run or something probably ok, but I don't think you want to run it for a prolonged period of time on land.

Is that a jet drive or an electric shift?

It is a Jet drive. It seems to have a strainer of some kind in the engine department with a removable cap.

I think you want to get a manual for your jet and see what it says about running dry - you might damage it. Some old jets were not to be run unless submerged.
