Can you run a 24V motor on 12V battery?

Will it drain the battery much faster or does it run the risk or ruining the motor as well if you try and do this?

It would be like half power all the time, SS. Not a good idea.

Get another battery or another troller.

Ever wonder why your car won't start with a half discharged battery? Electric motors are designed to run on a specific voltage. A 24 volt motor has armature windings designed for 24 volt operation. 12 volts will kill the battery quicker and will likely make heat in the motor instead of power which does it no good either.

Hey Silver, comparing apples and oranges. Ever wonder how they get the motor to run at a slower speed? Speed coils, they reduce the voltage to the armature depending on the setting. If it is that type of trolling motor, chances are that it has a 12 - 24 switch. If it is something like a electronic control made specifically for 24v, it will probably not even run. In other words it will not hurt a thing.

That is the old, old way of controlling speed, Truman.

All modern trollers are pulse modulated. The pulses are full voltage.

There is one thing you are missing Truman -- it's called "being designed" to run with speed coils. The armatures were built to handle that situation and speed coils were not a very efficient way to control motor speed. The heater motor on older cars had speed coils with the coils mounted in the cold air stream to the blower box to keep them from destroying themselves from the heat. A 24 volt motor has armature windings "designed" for 24 volt operation -- not 12 volts. Can you run it -- certainly. Will it last, will it be efficient, will it deliver enough power -- no! But go ahead and try it. It's not my motor so I don't care what happens. Up until the mid 1950's most engines had six volt system. Lots of farm tractors were fitted with 12 volt batteries and alternators back then and the starter was left as a 6 volt unit. Engine starting was vastly improved but the starter was used only intermittently so it tended not to suffer any long term damage. prolonged cranking on a balky engine was another story. Continuous duty on a motor running on half voltage is different issue -- especially if it has any electronics in it as most do these days..

Let's take a step back for a moment and find out what type and model trolling motor this is. If in fact this is a 12/24 volt 4spd or 5spd it will not make a difference. Not all trolling motors are electronic, but if in fact it is a pulse width modulated setup it will not run. MinnKota and MotorGuide factory service center for many years.

It is 24 volt only.
