Grandpa is pretty sick so we moved him closer. The old time boat racer had some old outboards in the shop. I looked on oldmerc.com but couldn't find out the vintage of one of them.

a 25HP mercury, green in color
serial # 30000027.

Any body know what it is??

I don't think so. It is Green and the 71 was black.

Also it looks more like a 50's era motor

Your serial number likely has one too many zeros in it, as a KG9 would be in the 3-hundred thousand range, not the 3-million range...

KG9s are very sought after. The 25hp rating was at about 4000 RPM. The motor was usually propped for 5000-5500 revs. At that point, it is pumping out closer to 40 horses. On a 14-15 foot aluminum boat it is a handful. Love the squeeze grip "dead-man" throttle, too.

Here's a pic of mine...
