can you add a tiller to an outboard that doesn't have one?

Been looking around for a 50-ish hp to set up with controls, but I don't have the controls yet and probably won't have them set up for another few months. I found a motor that looks great but doesn't have a tiller. Is there any downside to mounting a tiller for these few months before I set up the controls? I'm thinking about just welding some pipe onto there and using it to steer.

Just trying to avoid any pitfalls that could come with doing that. I'm sure it will lower my resale value but I don't know how much I care about that.

Thoughts?

Thanks!!

Most tiller handle motors have the throttle in them, you would have to devise a way to hook up a twist activated throttle or another system so you can give it gas.

Personally To rig it up like that I think would raise some safety issues. Depending on the motor evinrude made some of the 2 and 3 cyl with tillers maybe find one of those.

It would not be safe to operate by merely pushing on the throttle bar on the side of the motor. Once you did get it set up, the tiller would have to be removed.

The older OMCs with both tiller and remote capabilities had the tiller set up to be easily removable. I tried mine with it on there but it just got in the way.

In the late 70s
I rigged a temporary setup for a 67 Evinrude 40 hp. I used a normal throttle and shift remote.
I don't remember exactly what I did for the tiller. I Think I some how attached a metal tube to the pan and clamped it to the steering bracket with
a hose clamp. This was used very carefully especially if there was any congestion.
I also had to change the starter solenoid and I had a good used but no way to mount it in the 67 40 hp. So I made a ltitle nest in the pan out of some rags
and carefully laid the solenoid in it. I later sold the motor and pointed out the solenoid to the buyer.
