the reason im posting this in the starcraft forum is because that is where my interest lies . so, as the title say... can we talk $$$ ? im wondering what some you guys that have restored your starcraft aluminum boat have invested in the resto. i know that this is sometimes a delicate topic with some guys but if you are ok with it post up with what you did to your boat, motor, and even your trailer and what you have invested ontop of your initial boat purchase. whats your total ?? as some of you may have picked up on, im looking into getting an ss and it just seems that you should be able to do a farly inexpensive resto ( assuming the motor is good ) am i wrong ??? lol scott

Re: can we talk $$$$$ ( starcraft )

Scott I have around $1100.00-$1200.00 into mine total right now in its current state and most likely have at least $500.00 to $1000.00 to go so worst case I will have $2200.00 into a pretty much new boat which I am quite happy with as a total number :D. I know I couldnt buy a boat of this caliber new today for $2200.00. Oh yeah qnd I gave $800.00 for the boat initially but that is figured into my current total.

LOL I can find you alot of projects for $2500.00 . I like the fact that for the same amount of money I will know every inch of my boat is like new or better .

Re: can we talk $$$$$ ( starcraft )

I doubt I have too much more than $2000-$2500 into mine. We did dump a pile of money into the motor to get it running as it had been sitting for many years. We had the carbs rebuilt, new fuel pump, power pack, coils, stator, waterpump etc. However, that was over 5 years ago now and it hasn't been back to the shop since and has been reliable. I hadn't found iboats yet and these guys could have walked me through many of those repairs I paid a professional to do. Let me tell you though coolbikeguy, I have a shop for you......Fishers Marine located in middle of nowhere southern York county. He's not afraid to work on older motors, does good work and his rates are VERY reasonable.

And like Rick said, you can't buy a boat today for $2500 that will be near as nice as one of these boat properly restored.

Re: can we talk $$$$$ ( starcraft )

thanks for the tip on the mechanic EZ. i wrote it down and have in my roladex and in my phone. i rebuilt the carb on the merc i have now ( 1990 merc on 196? mirrocraft v hull ) but i still cant get the idle set right. in neutral the idle is fine but when i put her in gear the rpms drop alot. if i turn the idle higher then it cluncks real hard when it goes into gear. i just may give him a call. and asfar as $$ goes i figure even if you were to come in at 3500-4000 which would be high it would stil be hard to find a decent boat at that price. and like you said, if you do it wont be as nice as one that has been gone through and restored.

Scott, it all depends on what you want in the end. I have about $1300 into mine, including what i paid for it. keep in mind that its not 100% finished, but its water ready. its not a show boat by any means... but it gets me and my family out on the water, and i even get some compliments. it really depends on what you want the final product to be like.

Re: can we talk $$$$$ ( starcraft )

Scott, I gave 1,300.00 for my SS. It was more than I wanted to pay, but I have already had it on the river twice. I did blow a trim cylinder today though. The saving grace about that is, I also bought a 1985 Sea ray for 900.00 that has a good 3.0. I bought the other boat to use the power plant in the SS, and for spare parts alternator, starter and now trim cylinders. I am going to take the hull to the dump after I strip it, then sale the trailer.

And here are the pics of the motor and inside you requested.

Jeff.

Re: can we talk $$$$$ ( starcraft )

I posted this in another thread on the Resto page:

Deck: $70 (including lumber, ss screws, all/weather carpet, glue, etc)
Paint:
- $60 (Interlux)
- $20 (marine primer)
- $15 sanding products
Motor:
- $25 carb kit
- $75 new cables (shift & throttle)
- $12 impeller
- $25 tune up (local shop specializing in really old OB's like my '61 Johnson)
- $20 gas tank (6gal)
- $11 fuel line & bulb
- NEED new electric starter. No aftermarket...so rebuild. UGLY, pull start now
Battery: $80 (didn't skimp...wanted reliability)
Electrical:
- $24 fuse bus/terminal (wanted to clean up everything)
- $12 all new wires (bow to stern)
- $18 battery cables
Seats:
- $35 Butt seat & ped. (for fishing)
- NEED back-to-back seats (new = $150/pc. or used ~$60/pair)
Steering:
- NEED new steering wheel (retro look) $_??
- NEED update to Telflex ~$125

I've spent about $500 so far. I'm looking at another $500 ahead of me...besides normal wear & tear fixes.

I'm not very good at searching for things on Craigslist or ebay:mad:...but I am patient to find/spend money until I get a good deal. I suppose if I got better at searching for stuff my project would be farther along (ok certain of it:rolleyes:)

Here's a before and after shot. The "before" is actually after being cleaned of about 300lbs of junk and debris.

Nice Kev. Can you help me out with the rest of the money I need to spend too?

Saw that SS with that monster merc. It'll drop in price before he gets any takers out here. Our lakes are plugged up with fiberglass speed/wake machines and fancy bass boats with 250HP guns on the back.:(

My neighbor and I are the only "classic" boaters I've seen.

Ah, this is good news. It's a nice roomy, deep, light, stable hull. If you're going to go all out on one, this is certainly a good one to choose!
