Can U negotiate price on a custom boat?

I am close to pulling the trigger on ordering an Intrepid exactly how I want it and I wanted to know what the forum thinks about negotiating with a manufacturer that is building a boat to your exact specifications. Obviously, most manufacturers will negotiate on a used boat or a new boat they have on their lot but didn't know what advise the forum might give me on this situation. Should I just pay the price on the quote and be done with it?

you can always negotiate, where you win, is to be seen.

my dad was a general contractor of very high end custom homes. he never negotiated, if you wanted him to build your house, he gave you the price, and that was it.

I don't negotiate.
When someone ask me to courier something, I give them a price to do it and that is it.
With that said, you can sit down and order what you want on paper and negotiate at that time after you have everything the way you want it and see how they/dealer acts.

Sure you can negotiate, but you had better be prepared to either walk away or accept the price that is in front of you. A better approach may be to get the price and then ask the builder if there is anyway to shave some off of the price, or are there ways to build it cheaper without sacrificing quality. This will open the door for him to either cut the price or to suggest alterantives. If he needs the work or sales he may willingly cut the price and will not be insulted by your haggling. Sometimes when people give you a low price they look for ways to make up some of the money in hidden cost so you will need to spell out exactly what you want and what you will be getting.

Man...I just looked at their website and at those prices I hope you're able to get some sort of incentive. But on custom boats, they will not lower anything. It would be very difficult to find someone with your taste in options.

Your in a very high end boat SO there is allways room BUT it also depends on the kind of after sale service record the dealer has WHICH you would expect to be very GOOD

The Intrepid is a fine boat, however just because they’re customizing the boat to your specifications doesn’t mean you have to bend over. Buying anything of that scope and value has to be a partnership between you and your builder.

If a company has the arrogance to walk away from you’re business because you asked to negotiate the price just think how they’ll react to your needs after the sale.

If you’re not open to discussing the price then I’m not open to buying their product. It’s that easy and this is coming from a Salesman ;)

If you get a minute read through this and some other of his stuff. I’ve taken this class twice now and I learned something new each time.

Re: Can U negotiate price on a custom boat?

there is allways a little room to play.......

however...its custom.....that is a big word....price must be dealt with before you order....if you go too low and he bends to your price...there is the chance, they will cut corners you dont want them to cut. but they will have to, to bring the project in on budget

if you use the tactic of negotiating after its built....your relationship will be harmed...if not ruined.....as mentioned...this is a partnership

just make sure the price you want to pay is on paper. and everything is exactally spelled out....

good paper work makes good friends

cheers

Depends on how good business is. They will never tell you but business may be in the toilet and they would be happy to get the work to pay the bills and keep the doors open. Just my observation, dealers new and used seem to be closing up. Something is going on, here in FL. anyway, that no one is talking about.
Dont know how much money you are talking about but consider doing this. Insist that when you put money down that you immediately get title to the HULL, no excuses. Why? If the bank comes and put a lock on the door, that hull no matter how incomplete is yours and cant be part of the forclosure. Might sound like I am overreacting but I have seen it happen. Lots of half built houses in CAPE CORAL where the contractor has walked away and the people paying to have the house built are stuck with leins on the property and an unfinished house. Some will remember it happen in the boat building industry to.
I would buy a completed boat that fits your needs best. Just my opinion. FRED

Spotted this on the outboard non-repair section. (Just how bad off is the marine industry?) Gets a bit off topic but there is some discussion on things I have been observing. Think it will be worth reading if you are considering a new boat. regards FRED

This was great reading and will keep this in mind when I purchase something major again. But, as Oops stated the word "CUSTOM" has a large effect with the sale and may be stuck with the asking price.

Anyway, I'm sure were all anxious to hear how you make out. Be sure to let us know, Ray.

I sell CUSTOM built equipment for a living with a typical sale running between $250K - $2.5M and I sure wish my customers had the same ?you can?t negotiate it's custom? attitude. Unfortunately they know better and use the fact that I?m not the only show in town to their advantage.

Intrepid is a production builder and is not the only show in town either. Go talk with their competitors to see what they have to offer. Don?t be afraid to tell Intrepid outright that you?re talking with other builders as well. If Intrepid isn?t interested in negotiating I?m sure their competitors would be more than happy to.
Ask my grandafather always told me, it's always a no unless you ask. ;)

Dingbat, thanks for posting that link! I've been using that technique for many years when buying used cars but I never knew it had a name :) It works very well for all the reasons they stated.
