1985 Galaxy 3.8L OMC I believe stringer outdrive (tilt/trim on motor and outdrive)

what can I check to see if it is an outdrive problem versus an engine problem?

The top half of the motor is loose but the lowerhalf is locked. timing chain looks good, oil looks good, distributor looks good,

any suggestions would be help ful. I know there is more I should ask so if there something that would help me out go ahead and tell me please.

Pull the outdrive and see if the engine turns.

Re: can the outdrive lock up the motor?

the boat run great all day and the next day is when it locked up running about 25 MPH, just a loud clunk and that was it. got towed in tried to start it again, started right up idle at the dock for 20 min. took off again thats when it locked up for good. I am new to the inboard motor world... so any thoughts or suggestions

Nope, not if the upper part of the drive is causing the problem.

Neutral in a boat is not the same as pushing in the clutch in a car. The u-joints and upper gears are always turning with the engine. All of the shifting occurs in the outboard unit between the upper gears and the lower gears. If the ujoints let go or the upper gears lockup the engine cannot turn. That is why you are getting all the same advice on removing the drive.

Thank you for explaining that I was just trying to make sure and to understand what was going on.

Thanks
