Can Stator go bad?

I've got an '84 75hp Mercury OB. I replaced the Switch box, all wire harnesses on the motor, Spark plugs and wires. The motor has been running perfect. Yesterday I took it out, was a little hard to start, went about 2 miles, throttled down to prepare to stop and the motor died like you turned the key off. Have a factory manual and have checked everything with my VOC meter. The only problem I can find is the stator is testing 2900 ohm's and the book says it should test between 5900 and 6900 ohm's. My question, can a stator just quit like that or what else should I be looking for?

Yes. a stator can fail. If those readings are correct, it looks like yours did.

-W

Thanks. I didn't know a stator could just fail all at once like that. Guess it's time to spend more money.

Well, a new stator fixed it. Had to wait until I could scrape up $160 before I could fix it. Thanks for all your help.
