Can seal on VP raw water pump be replaced?

I think I'm getting some water leaking behind the seal that the impeller sits against in the raw water pump on a VP 7.4GSi. I ordered the seal which is highlighed in red on the photo below but then was told you can't actually replace this seal. Seems strange since you can buy it separately. Anyone know if this can be replaced with the pump mounted?

See drawing below...

Thanks,
Jason

I usually just replace the whole pump on those motors when they start to leak. If you got a leak, the bearing is probably shot too.

The seal can be replaced, but it's a bear to do.

What is involved in replacing just the seal? I had the housing and impeller out today and the bearing still feels like new. I'm just getting a drip from the small weep holes on the bearing side of the housing.
