Can remote Shift Cable affect shifting

I have a 5.7L with OMC outdrive that was shifing fine last weekend for extended periods. Now however it seems to have degraded (clicking and not full engagement going into forward). Reverse seems fine. The shift cable at the stern was replaced and adjusted about 10 operating hours ago by a well qualified mechanic. The boat is 17 years old and as far as I know the remote shift cable (from the engine to the operator station) has never been replaced.

My question is: Could the remote cable be streatching or binding and affect the shifting, causing it to not fully engage?

Also, should I bother R&Ring this cable or simply take it back to the mechanic to have it checked by a qualified person. I understand the risk associated with ruining a set of gears in the lower end.

Thanks in advance, for any thoughts.

To answer your question, Yes. If the 10 hours of operation has occured within 30 to 60 days I would call the tech and see what he says. Maybe it's a
warranty issue ? ? ? Maybe Not ! ! !

Things break-in and adjustments have to be made on occasion. Take it back. It's probably a quick fix and I'm sure he'd rather get it back untouched. I wouldn't charge for it if it were me. You might want to check your gearlube, however.

I have a feeling it wasn't properly adjusted in the first place and was on the verge of barely working before. I had the same problem when a repair shop replaced my first OMC cable. Since I started doing them. I never had a problem.
