just had my transom rebuilt on my center console with 150 yamaha saltwater motor. 1 hr. after launching, oil level alarm sounded, oil level was low, and oil pumping from bilge. Took to my mechanic. he found CDI unit plugged into trim/ and oil pump plugged into trim harness. CDI only putting out 5.6 volts (should be 12.5 volts) My mechanic says its a possiblility that CDI was shorted out due to improper wiring. Only ran motor for about 1 hr. before alarm went off. Could miswiring be the cause for my CDI failure? Any idea where i might be able to find a good used CDI...(new ones arent cheap). Oil in bilge is believed to be from not capping the hose during transom rebuild, and just shoving it into hull to get out of the way...gravity fed.

Hi,

My buddy just bought a new CDI unit thinking that was his wiring problem. As it turns out it wasn't. It was for a 40HP 4 stroke Yamaha.

Yes, miswiring can fry your CDI unit, especially if ground and power were switched. Electronics are highly sensitive to improper wiring and grounding.
