Can I use water muffs?

I have a 72 Johnson 100hp with electric shift. My water pump housing has two water tubes which is kind of strange. Most I have seen have only one. There is no pee stream on the motor but it does have two holes on the back with a lable over them reading something like Water Silencing. Not much comes out of them. I think that the warm water returns back to the water pump and comes out into the water intake chamber to mix with cool water and comes back into the motor. This motor came from up north and maybe this is a way to keep the motor running warm enough in very cold water. Now for the muffs. If I put muffs on the lower unit and cover up both sides of the intake chamber, do I create a closed system and force water past the seals into the lower unit? If so, is a test tank my only way to run the motor out of the water?

You guys know a lot about these old motors so give me your thoughts, even if they are just educated guesses.

Thanks.

If the muffs do force water into the lower unit,it means the seals are bad.The same thing would happen running in a bucket or the lake.

water muffs are used for forcing water to the water pump which is directly above the lower unit no problem except enough water must be pushed through the hose in order to see a stream of water come through back of the motor. I have to physically hold my muffs tight in order to see water come through the top exhaust.

Actually if you have to force your gearcase to take cooling water, you may have a worn pump,or a restriction in the cooling system.

Maybe start you own thread, and the replies will come direct to you.
