Hi Guys:

In my opinion you would be better off buying the right pump. You can amortize the cost over several oil changes.

I see some pumps for removing oil can be pretty expensive.
This is my firs time changing the oil, use to pay my mechanic to do it.

About $25 is too expensive? That's about all I paid for the 12v type at my local marine store that emptied the crankcase of my 4.3 in about 10-15 minutes or so and with no excessive labor. I believe the brand was called Sea Dog but I'm sure there's others.

Buying that one along with the oil and filter yourself should be less than what the mechanic was charging you.

I got this pump from harbor freight and I am curious if anyone has used anything similar or this item to remove Oil? http://www.harborfreight.com/multi-use-transfer-pump-66418.html

I just changed the oil in three engines with that exact pump. It worked perfect and I had zero mess. You just have to make sure the oil is warm before using it. For the price, you could trow it away when you're done with it.

I used a similar pump for 7 years of winterizing and it wouldn't work this past one. I am going to something like the Oil Boy from Tempo, better quality, quicker and less mess, also useful for every other toy. The one you have generally takes a long time (15 minutes) just to get the oil flowing.

I have that pump . . .

I use it for both gasoline pumping and oil pumping.

Pumping in general is kind of slow and it is good to use the largest (inner diameter) tube possible for pumping out of a dipstick.

Make sure the oil is warmed up from running the engine for 20 mins or so, else you will be there all day.
