Can I use a lower unit from a different year for replacement on 70HP

The lower unit on 1988 70 HP went bad. Can I use a lower unit from a 1978 to replace it? Is there a place to see what lower units are interchangeable?

Look in the "Top Secret File" stickey at the top of the page, I think there is a interchange chart there.
