Some years ago I replaced my entire PTT system on my '93 Merc V6. The original PTT system was 3 wire. The replacement PTT system was 2 wire. I swapped out the solenoids with relays and the included wiring harness to make it work.
I have a 3 wire PTT motor from some years ago, that was hardly used. My limited understanding of electronics leads me to believe that the relays will work just fine with a three wire PTT motor.
The 3 wire PTT motors have a center winding ground. So the motor uses solenoids to energize one winding for up and the other winding for down. I think the solenoid would ground the end of the unused winding on the three wire motor. That would be no harm no foul, If I have it right. Do I?
I did save the solenoids, so I could restore the original.
Another Merc PTT motor (likely ARCO) where the casing is rotted out, and the boat lives on a lift. The third motor for this Merc, since I had it in 2009. My '98 Johnny which is in the saltwater during the season is still on the orig. PTT motor. No corrosion that I can see.
Please advise.
