Ok long story short here's the boat......

95 bayliner 2050 ss 355 w an alpha one

14.25 x 21p aluminum 3 blade

wot is 4900 - 5000 rpm redline is 4600 tho

GPS 53 @ 4600 w 2 adults and 120lb worth of kids

Question is, could i turn a 14 x 23p and maybe get a little more speed, lower rpms and be able to run wide open? Im happy w the hole shot so not interested in giving up top end for take off with a 4 blade. The prop i wanna try is $138 so just wanted some opinions before im trying to sell it on craigslist!

Thanks in advance

Re: Can i turn a 23p??

The problem that I see is that the performance with a moderate load is within spec for the engine. I assume that your 4900-5000 WOT RPM figure is with 1 person only. So you put a couple more people in it and now you are within spec.

If you go to a 23 pitch, your RPM will most likely drop to within spec with 'no load' and under spec with a load. You will probably still see about 53 mph, as the engine is on the declining side of the HP and Torque curve at WOT. So, it has got nothing left to give.

With kids in the boat 50 mph is plenty fast - IMHO.

No actually even with 4 good size adults, full cooler, gear, and tank of gas i can turn it to 5000 and with the fam i described above i can hit it too. When i said 4600 w the fam, thats running it to 4600 and stopping there. On good water last weekend i showed off for my buddys and went wot for a couple secs, and speedo was around 57mph. I agree totally that 50 w kids is fast, we don't do it all the time and only on good water for it too! Just don't wanna sound like an unsafe idiot lol.
