Can I tow this with my Geo Metro?

I watched in amazement as a Geo Metro drove by pulling a rather large utility trailer (although any trailer would look large behind a Metro). Then I noticed Mr. Geo was hauling a load of bricks! This must have been close to 4000# judging from how that Metro was squatting in the rear.

I don't care how short this guy's trip was, this is what I call "unsafe at any speed."

I just had to share. Maybe this should have been a SHT, but I opted for here in light of some similar sounding questions posted recently on this forum.

Granted it was overloaded with how you describe it but I am sure it can and will have a towing weight limit applied to it. I used to tow a 12ft house trailer behind a 1.3 litre Nissan Sunny (manual gearbox) with 2 adults and 2 children aboard. No problems apart from a little increased wear on the clutch mechanism. I could change a clutch on it in a little over an hour.

It wasn't towing a load of bricks!
Those bricks were part of a wood fired steam boiler locomotive built to look like a trailer being pulled when in reality it was pushing the Metro.

No more $3/gallon gas for him!

A Metro (the original ones had 3 cylinder engines) could tow the Titanic with a bit of help starting out but.......... I doubt I would trust those old tiny Metro brakes.

Heh, reminds me of the Metro I saw pulling a 14ft boat. The fact they even MADE a trailer hitch for a Metro in the first place is funny to me.

That Metro engine may only have 3 cylinders, but they are 3 strong cylinders ;)

I had a Geo Tracker, which is basically a bit bigger than a geo metro with a 4 cylinder 1.6 liter engine. I used it to trailer a 20 foot Bombardier RIB with a pair of 60 horse Mercs on it last summer.

Was kind of funny looking when I was driving...

Re: Can I tow this with my Geo Metro?

I have a 86 Jeep Laredo...4 cyl...the problem wasn't it wouldn't pull the 19' fiberglass boat, but that constant feeling of the boat being at the helm, not me.

I switched to a Chevy Surburban 2500, 2wd, manul trans, 3/4 ton. The boat still scares me...as I am unused to towing anything, but I do feel the brakes will stop me and the 2500 lb (probable weight) boat...it still bobs on roads, but I don't feel I am going to be thrown off by going over 30 mph. Actually went as fast as 45mph...(white knucked just the same)... as I adjust to towing...it should be just fine. Please reassure me!

I did a 1 7/8 ball on the 2" reciever on this very boat, it jumped off within a half mile, scared me to death. A week later, jumped off a two inch ball, rammed the rear of the Jeep...at 25 mph and scared another ten years off my life. I am locking the ball on the reciever lever in hopes of avoiding another one of those episodes...good thing both chains were on both times.

The last is kinda like reading in the news paper...'man eaten by shark in bath tub." Unbelievable but true.
