can i switch parts from a later year outboard

hello, im wondering if i could put in a "shim" for my carburator for my 1976 johnson 15 horse that was in use during 1979. and if i could put on the tuned exhaust from the 79 and newer outboards. and what parts can be interchangable from 1972-1992.
