OK, so I have a boat I am rebuilding. I have a 3.7L in it,[ya I know :D] and it has been sitting for about 5 years now. The outdrive is off right now. Is it possable to kick the engine over, and fire it for a min without the outdrive on?? I just want to make sure all is well, and she surived the storedge. I have some work to do on the outdrive, and gimble area, so realy dont want to put the drive back on.

Thanks for any help!

A few seconds shouldn't hurt it a bit. Just don't let the engine get the exhaust bellow warm.

You might need someone to turn the engine when you put the drive back on though. The coupler will not be in the same position as when you took the drive off.

Well I have to replace the engine mount, and replace the gimble bearing, and replace the trim switches, so I will have to align everything later anyway, so thats no big deal.

I just did not know if there were something in the transom plate that needed to be kinda "held together" with the drive before the engine started. Agean... this is just going to be a test fire, for a min.

Like when you go to the Dr and he says something bad is going on. Wait for a few second opinions. TD and maybe Don should or will jump in on this question. If you run it and screw it up your screwed. Just my .02

15 to 20 seconds with the drive off, shouldn't hurt anything, and an overheat isn't your concern. The problem comes from heat from the exhuast burning up the rubber hoses in the exhaust system because there is no water to keep them cool.

Ayuh,...

And, the exhaust shutter is in directly in the exhaust stream.... It'll burn up in No time....

Why not just jamb a garden hose into the in-coming water line,....
Then you can run it All you want...

Thats defently dooable. I would think there would be enough flow to keep things cool enough for this situtaion.

uhm.... thats how you would do it if the drive was on the boat. A garden hose + muffs.

Actually doing it this way will give you plenty of water flow. All the water is doing is filling up the heat exchanger and and then going out thru the exhaust elbow like it would normally.

Since there's no drive installed you don't have to worry about the raw pump.

Just make sure you have the hose valve turned on all the way.

The difference is theres no water pump on the boat right now because the leg is off. But you knew that.

you wont need a pump because the force from the hose will fill the exchange up. It will run up the engine and out like there was a leg on it.

Great. Thanks guys!!!

Thats the project for today. I got the boot up by the house and all blocked up yesterday. Today I am going to pull the plugs, get a little oil in the cyl's and turn her over a little by hand to make sure its not stuck. Then rig up my "test fire" fuel tank, and see if she will pop off.
