My 2000 Evinrude 50HP outboard is leaking a bit of gear lube from the prop housing. It is clearly from the prop not the filler holes.
Ok maybe this is the seal?
Can I do this myself?
Any special tools needed?
do I need to drop the lower unit to do this?
Do I need a manual too?
Any input will be greatly appreciated.

Re: Can I replace seal myself?

First locate the actual leak, if its leaking where the prop shaft exits the bearing, you can replace the seals with little effort. Just thread a screw into the seal between the seal housing and shaft and pull on screw, seal will pop out. If the oil is leaking further into the housing then the o ring on bearing assy needs replacing. Its actually fairly easy to pull the bearing assy. I just pulled 1 on a 76 motor and it came apart nice and easy. Once you pull the bearing assy, you can then replace the o ring and prop shaft seals since you have it out.http://www.boats.net/parts/search/B... 2000/DRIVESHAFT & PROPELLER SHAFT/parts.html

A simple puller can be made, 2 pieces of all thread, some nuts and washers and piece of plate steel. You actually pull on the prop shaft and it pushes the bearing assy out, if you are careful, and stop pulling on the shaft at the right point, you won't have to remove the shaft. Can be tricky putting the pin and spring back.

Good luck

Are you certain it's gear lube and not fuel oil residue from the exhaust through prop? Is there any indication of water entry into the gearcase or fluid loss by drop in lube level? You might want to pressure test the case if there's any doubt before replacing seals.

Excellent point. Make certain before changing.
What does it smell like ?? If it smells like gas it is most likely unburnt 2 stroke oil. If it smells more like rotten eggs then it is lower unit oil.

WOW.. Great help. Diagram link is most helpful.

I will pressure test first too.

Many thanks. I will post back with results.
