Can I rent a flywheel puller?

Does anybody know where or if I can rent a flywheel puller and holder?

I need to pull the flywheel off my Johnson 115 to replace the regulator and I'd really rather not spend $100 and hour to have somebody do it.

Pulling a flywheel seems pretty straight forward and easy, but I know I will need a certain puller, and a holder for when I put it back on and torque it down.

Not sure if those are tools that can even be rented though.

Thanks.

Pretty sure auto parts stores loan them out

For the puller, a harmonic balancer puller works fine with a longer arm socket or torque wrench. I'd just change out the bolts to grade 8 bolts if that's not what is included. They are pretty cheap and are available at any auto parts store. As for a holder, you need to be creative with that. Not sure how your flywheel looks like, but you can either get a strap wrench large enough for the flywheel (which I find to be a bit of a cost) or create your own method. For my 33hp, I just jam a screwdriver between the teeth of the flywheel and the starter bracket and carefully tighten it to the proper torque (over 100 ft lbs). With my smaller motors, I created my own "strap wrench" since there isn't as much torque required.

Is it possible to loosen and re-tighten the nut on the top of the flywheel with an impact gun? Would I still need a holder if I used an impact gun?

You can buy different bits for impact guns that are pre-set for certain torques, they will limit the gun to a specific torque.

Anybody think this would work or no?

What else is involved with pulling an OMC flywheel? I think I remember somethign about a flywheel key involved.

Thanks.

Don't use an impact gun. Use a torque wrench. If you torque the flywheel too much, you run the possibility of shearing the flywheel key when you get the motor running and possibly ruining the flywheel. Torque it to specs based on the manual. Don't worry about the key. Just check to make sure it is in tact.

I'm not familiar with your motor as I work on much smaller motors. Also, if you can give a year and model number, people here on this forum can really help.

One other thing, if you plan to work on the motor yourself, it's best to invest in the proper tools. Harbor Freight carries usable tools for the amateur at low costs.

Re: Can I rent a flywheel puller?

I was able to borrow a harmonic balancer from the local auto parts store here. Basically I had to buy it then they would give me a full refund as long as I returned it within 3 days.

It worked like a charm to pop the flywheel off my evinrude 70. I used a thick piece of leather strap, between the flywheel and lifting eye to hold it from spinning.

Auto Zone loans out tools, and sells them pretty cheap for that matter ,too. As far as using an impact goes , you can if you have a set of good quality calibrated torque sticks, which I'm guessing most do-it-yourselfers don't. safest bet is to use the torque wrench.

What's the best way of keeping the flywheel from spinning?

trendsetter240, did you just jam the leather strap against the teeth of the flywheel?

I have heard of using rope inside a cylinder also, but I think that there may be a possibibility of harming something that way.

Buy one, not very expensive. By the time you rent one, pay a security deposit on it, need it longer than you thought etc etc you may as well buy one and you have it for ever.

Re: Can I rent a flywheel puller?

kenmyfam....I was actually thinking about buying one, don't have any problems buying tools, since you will most likely use them again.

Do they make pullers specific to outboard flywheel's or will a harmonic balancer puller work fine, as mentioned?

Also is there a specific tool for holding an outboard flywheel or do you just have to figure out a way to hold it, like the leather strap mentioned above?

Thanks.

I tried the Harbor Freight set also but the yoke broke on the first attempt to remove the flywheel on my 1968 Johnson 100hp. I made my own puller with a piece of 1/2inch steel plate. Good luck!

While at the store or online at Harbor Freight pick up a set of strap wrenches to hold that flywheel in place while torquing the bolt down. They're dirt cheap and will more than pay for themselves the first time you use them.

Would those strap wrenches hold a flywheel on a 115? I don't know if it would hold with the teeth on it.

no. i have that same one and it does not fit any of my motors. having said that, if you change out the strap, it may. you might be able to make a pseudo strap wrench by using a leather belt firmly attached to a 2x2 piece of hardwood. the leather belt would wrap around the teeth. i did something similar with a rope and a 2x2 for my 10hp. the flywheel did not have teeth. It worked all right.

Agree, Leather strap, lump of wood and some screws will work just fine. A little "shock" when starting to take off the nut goes a long way as well.
