Can I put a 250 powerhead on my 200?

Being the worrysome person I am (thanks mom), and knowing that my engine is teetering on the edge of 100psi in a couple cylinders, I, out of morbid curiousity, started pricing powerheads here on iboats.

I noticed that a vendor here lists the powerhead as 200-250, same price. If I was to replace my powerhead sometime down the road, could I bolt a 250hp powerhead onto my 200hp outboard adapter and lower unit? The seloc manual I have has them both at the same gear ratio.

I would do this in a heartbeat. I could use the extra ponies. Might not even wait for the engine to die. Just keep the 200 as a 'spare' or sell it off.

It's a 1997 Evinrude 200 Ocean Pro V6.

Thanks!

It'll bolt right up. All you'd need is the carb assemblies although yours will work. Actually yours might accelerate better. Dont expect anything earth-shattering.

BTW -- 100 lbs compression is pretty good on a closed deck looper.

Thanks DH. It runs great now. I was just throwing ideas around.

I actually just spoke to a rep here at iboats. He said if I ordered either the 200 or 250 I would recieve the same engine. The difference is mainly in the carbs. Is that true? If so, can I rejet to make some more power? Anything else I can do? Any sites out there geared toward this kind of thing you know of?

Thanks!

Close. The 200 and 225 3.0 liters are the same part number powerhead. The 250 3.0 has slightly different (better) port timing.

All have the same bore, stroke, cubic inches etc. And obviously the same gear ratio.
