Can I mess up the timing if I replace the Fly Wheel on my 1997, 75 HP ELP Force?

Hello,

The Flywheel on my 1997, 75 HP, 3 Cylinder, One carb Force Motor has two bad places. I understand that there are magnets under the flywheel and there is a key way. I also understand there is a special removal tool that protects the crankshaft and there is a second tool to hold the flywheel during removal.

My concern is when I put the replacement flywheel on the motor, will I screw up the timing? Does the key way prevent it from going on in the wrong timing position? I have seen some used ones on E-Bay, but is there a place that has new replacement flywheels?

I need to replace my flywheel before it gets any worse.

Thanks,

Donald

Your timing should not change but just to be sure, you should check it after installing a replacement. The key way will insure that you install it so that it is oriented correctly. New flywheels are in the neighborhood of $475. I've seen used ones for $80 - $100.
