This is for a 9.8 hp little merc that I can get for $175.
The serial is 7196133 which makes it a 1985 ,or so I think.
I would use this as a trolling motor and it would be important for me to be able to hook it up to a remote shift and throttle setup.
Can I do this with this little engine?
Thank you for your help.

Re: Can I hook up a remote on this?

My little boat has a 650 merc and a 9.8 mounted side by side on the transom.
A removeable tie bar links the steerinng I could not find the kit mentioned so I rigged it up myself for shift and throttle. I have dual late 60s black mercury controls bolted together and mounted in my boat. one for the 650 and the other with the lever mounted on the opposite side is for the 9.8

To rig up the cables was pretty easy. It just involved a couple of bits of bent metal and some bolts and self locking nuts.
I can not show you exactly in a picture as the motor is off the boat and it is about 6 degrees outside.
Basically it is counter intuitive, the normally moving part of the cable gets clamped to the motor casting and the linkage for the throttle or the shifter are moved by the barrel that would normally be mounted in a slot on the motor. In the attached picture you can see the little bracket I made that mounts to the throttle. the bolt goes through the round half inch by 3/4 inch barrel threaded over the cable end. the terminal end of the cable goes over the pin on the head of the motor rides in the little cradle cast into the block for it and gets clamped down with the other little bent bit of metal.
It is pretty simple.

On the other side for the shift pretty much the same deal. the bolt for the shifter goes through that little barrel on the cable, (use self locking nuts for all of this) and the terminal end gets clamped to the motor casing just about the same way. When the shifter is all the way forward on the controls, the shift cable is extended to its max. the terminal end is mounted solid to the engine so it pushes the little barel the other way, it is bollted to the shift linkage pushing it forward and into the forward gear, get it?
One last thing I removed the tiller on mine completely. I could not get the throttle to work well remotely with the throttle in the tiller still engaged.
I made a little bracket that is bolted under the front center of the motor that the steering tie bar attaches to to steer the motor from my main motor.

oops the pictures are too big to attach, I could send to you if I had your email
