Can I get parts to rebuild my tilt & trim?

I searched for the answer to this but was unsuccessful.

I Have a 97 Evinrude 150 Oceanpro, and the tilt and trim works fine; however, the motor is almost rusted through and the manual override is frozen shut. I needed it last summer when a relay went out and broke 3 screwdrivers trying to turn it. I am starting to get a little hesitation in the unit, and I would just like to rebuild the thing before the season starts. I can't find any rebuild kits or even any schematics for it. All I can seem to find is a) complete units for $500 +, and b) pump motors.

Is there such a kit or am I out of luck? I am pretty mechanically inclined, and used to rebuild nail guns and power tools so I feel like I could handle the task, but I don't know what parts are involved or where to get them.

Does anyone have any advise?

Thank you in advance,

-Jason

The first thing you will need is the factory Service Manual. Not aftermarket manual.

If the motor is rusted through as you say, it is unlikely that you will be able to rebuild it. Possible, but unlikely. Usually starter/alternator repair shops rebuild these for fairly cheap, if it can be done. Ask your local dealer for the shop they use, as alot of them send out the tnt motors to get rebuilt. Is this a salt water motor?

Hey Chris,

THanks for the reply. Yes, it is a salt water motor. I'm not so much worried about the motor itself, I figured I'd have to replace that. What I want to rebuild is the pump/ram/valve unit and get the manual override in working order. I figured taking it all apart and putting in new seals etc. and new fluid would be a good idea, replacing whatever worn out / broken parts I find along the way. I just can't seem to find any parts.

So the factory manual for the engine would include the tnt assy? According to iboats parts there are two possible manufacturers for the unit but I don't know how to tell which one I have.

Order the factory manual from the dealer, not seloc or Clymer manuals.
The factory manual dedicates over 40 pages to the T/T system.

Take a look on ebay for manuals first.
Look through these.

Heres over 600 more manuals to check out.

My tilt motor looks the same, have you tried bleeding the system?
You'll need an impact screwdriver ($25 at Sears) to loosen the manual release valve.

I have the OMC manual for my '98 Johnny 150HPV6. It does not contain rebuilding procedures for the PTT unit. It identifies a OMC Accessories Service Manual that is supposed to have it.

There should be a seal kit for that motor. The one for my motor was about $50, and avail at the Johnny Dealer. Look on Crowleymarine.com for the exploded parts list, and grab the part number.

PTT motors can be had aftermarket. ARCO makes quite a few. I would recommend that as a source for you.

thanks all, i will probably pull her off this week and start looking for the manual. I know I need a new motor. I do have an impact screwdriver so I will try that on the override, but I have a feeling she hasn't been turned in 14 years and is locked down tight. I'll let everyone know how it goes!

Re: Can I get parts to rebuild my tilt & trim?

My engine is older (1994 150 hp) and I got the manual release valve loosened using a BIG screwdriver with a square shaft, 12 inch long shaft and I put a wrench on the shaft, my shoulder against the handle end, a good screwdriver with wide hardened tip will do it.
I would not change the seals in the T/T unless theres a problem.

For the hesitation I would just bleed it and top off with tranni fluid.
Is it spitting?

The 1998 accessorie service manual , part # 520213 contains all the info you will need to repair your t/t unit. It covers both fas trak and conventional t/t units. Also info on remote controls, system check and ect.

The hardest part of work on the T/T is loosing the bolts that attach it to the engine, be CAREFULL.Once you get it out it's pretty easy to put the rebuild kit on it.I rebuilt one that I had that didn't work when I got it,you need a special tool to take it a part. After a season of use it took a crap on me so I just got one used for $350.00 and slapped it on.

NE Fan, The '97 PTT unit should be held on by two stainless rods. These are held by little keepers at each end. No bolts....
