Same 1979 235 "Rude" I'm having carb problems with is leaking power trim fluid all over the Chesapeake Bay. I filled the resevoir recently and within a dozen are so up and downs it's almost empty again. Can I change the seals on this myself? If so where can I find instructions, the kit and do I have to remove the unit from the engine?

Re: Can I Fix a Leaking Tilt / Trim

It has been a while but I replaced the seals in my trim-n-tilt unit on my Evinrude 115. The only problem is that it requires a spanner wrench (not in everyone's tool box). I made a tool when I repaired mine and then bought a spanner wrench since I thought I would have to replace the seals again. Now that I have the wrench, I have not had a problem with the unit.

I notice you are using your boat in the Chesapeake Bay. If you are near Portsmouth, I recommend you check with Ron's Marine on Rodman Ave. I usually get my parts there.

My 70 HP Johnson had leaks in both trim pistons. I found that a good spanner wrench for something with 4 holes is hard to get. Three hole wrenches are common. OMC sells the right tool for $56. I paid the same to get the seals fixed. Dexron/Mercon tranny fluid can be used in it. Cheaper than OMC fluid.

Re: Can I Fix a Leaking Tilt / Trim

Thanks for the input guys. I pulled the boat out this morning and am delivering it to the doctor this PM. Decided to let a pro handle my carb and T&T problems.
