Ignition switch and key wearing on 1974 Johnson 115, is going bad. Can I use a simple button starter switch to start engine instead of replacing
the 6 terminal ignition switch. Thus taking the other 4 wires and hooking them up a different way on a toggle switch or something.

you would need to run at least 2 different ones. One to engage starter and one to kill motor

Nico is correct, however, with his two-button approach, ignition accessory power would be on all the time, and there would not be any way to choke the motor.

A DPDT switch and a push button for choke and a push button for start, would be the minimum, I would recommend.

Why don't you just replace the switch with a new one? They're neither hard to find, nor are they expensive....

Gotta agree. By the time you buy 3 or 4 switches, tear your hair out and drink a case of beer out of frustration, you more than paid for 1 new switch.

Besides, all those modifications would not fit in the control box.

I would most certainly buy a replacement ignition switch and one terminal at a time swap the old wires over to the new switch and your done with it. Can't be an easier fix... JMHO!

Correct, easier to replace, I'll go that route when she gives out. Thanks for saving me some headaches.

Take it from my experience either replace it now or get the replacement & keep it in the boat with the necessary tools to change it. Mine went out when it started storming in the middle of a night fishing trip on the far side of a 3500 acre lake & our "rescue paddle"broke after about 20 strokes. Back then I wasn't smart enuff to keep any tools in the boat. Had to call a buddy at 3 am to come with his boat 45 miles to the lake & tow us in. I'm still buying him beer for that one & that's been over 15 years ago. It's funny now but it was nothing like funny at the time. Maybe that's just my luck though. Jim.
