My gf who I have been dating for almost 8 years and that I have been living with for the past few years is going back to college to get her masters for two years. During this time I will be paying for everything. Can I claim her as a dependent on my taxes?

Thx

I doubt it. Wow 8 years good for you, I've been with mine for ten as of last month. As far as marriage goes we always say it's all over but the paperwork.

Re: Can I claim my gf as a dependent?

I just scanned through the 1040 instruction booklet (just download it from here: http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/i1040.pdf . Apparently a dependent must have been married to you, be currently married to you, or be some relation to you through a prior marriage or current marriage or blood. So unless you want to say you are married, you can not claim her.

BTW, I claim my wife as a dependent, and the feds will not be able to determine if that is a fact unless I provide the documents showing I was married in a foreign country. They have not questioned that she is married to me, and take my tax return at its face value.

Go for it! Claim her as your wife and let us know how it works out for you.

Check out common law marriages for your state.

Grab the IRS packet online and read the rules for dependents. It's pretty specific and you should be able to figure it out by reading that part of the instructions.

Dear IRS Cop:

Some guy on iboats Forum told me I could claim her, so I did.

*snicker, snicker* :)

I got a better idea.
List her as a depreciating asset and write he off at 20%pa.

As always, consult with the person preparing your taxes.:D

Will do that. I wanted to ask around here cause it only cost me time here, before I pay to talk to someone about this.

Also she is as scared of the M word as I am.

+1 on common law, If I remember it right, up here if you are residing together for "X" amount of time and for some reason "split the sheets" your partner has the ability to claim against your holdings or visa versa.

So check it out, you may already be there and not know it.

If you choose that route, be sure not to tell her shes a "depreciateing asset"That could have worse consequences than pissin off the IRS!!!
