Re: Can I claim my gf as a dependent?
I just scanned through the 1040 instruction booklet (just download it from here:
http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/i1040.pdf . Apparently a dependent must have been married to you, be currently married to you, or be some relation to you through a prior marriage or current marriage or blood. So unless you want to say you are married, you can not claim her.
BTW, I claim my wife as a dependent, and the feds will not be able to determine if that is a fact unless I provide the documents showing I was married in a foreign country. They have not questioned that she is married to me, and take my tax return at its face value.
Go for it! Claim her as your wife and let us know how it works out for you.
