Can I change to a standard coil from the CD Magna Power?

Chrysler 105hp Outboard (1975 to 1977 year)
Model # 1059 HF
Serial # 14018

It came with a Magnapower ignition CD and I have read that I can remove it along with it's small coil and update it with a simple ignition coil along with a capacitor connected to the points. Is this true? Does anyone know the details?

Thank you for you help.

I'm not up on which years had what---BUT--If the Magna-power you have is Magna-Power II, (105, 1975-1977)then you can retrofit to Prestolite or Motorola Magna-Power distributor ignition.

In any case, with Motorola or regular points ignition (which I don't recommend) you will need a distributor with a lobed rotor for points--Big bucks. You will also need an adapter for the alternator stator --$80. And a flywheel and distributor drive belt. If you still decide to go old-fashioned points/condenser ignition, realize that you will be installing a low performance unit that only delivers about 10,000 volts and although easy to work on, it is MARGINAL in a marine application. There is a reason why all auto makers and all outboard manufacturers went to electronic ignition in the 1970s.

Unless you can find used parts, retrofitting is going to cost well more than the engine is worth and is going to be a long hassle. --finding parts then installing--winter project for sure.

If you already have Motorola ignition, it would be much easier and cheaper to buy a used CD box.
