just got a small vintage boat, it came with a 50's 8hp evinrude. The outboard has a old-style fuel line connector which is uncommon now, I guess (see attached.). Is it better to change it to the modern one?

Well there is more to it than just changing the connector. Your motor uses a Pressurized Fuel system with a Two hose Tank. One of the hoses supplies air pressure from the crankcase to push fuel up to the carb. No Fuel Pump needed. A new style fitting is a single hose, which requires a Fuel pump to get fuel to the carb. The old fitting is available, but are very pricey. To convert to the single line system a Fuel Pump will be needed and a source of Pressure-Vacuum pulses to operate the pump will need to be accessed, usually via the Bypass covers.

just a note, if you opt to use the older type two line system you must also use the matching tank and line, if you do not have them they can be hard to find/ expensive the good is that changing to the newer one line system is usually not a hard task. both systems work fine.

are you wanting to change because the connector leaks? if so its most likely the o-rings in the connector. they are replaceable and only about $0.20 each.

the tank that came with the outboard is missing the fuel line (so no connector whatsoever). I do have another tank (given to me but never had to use it yet), it has the old style connector but it wont slide onto the motor connector all the way for some reason, only half way. any idea? seems to be the right size. see attached.

never mind, looks like the tank-side connector is tiny bit smaller than the motor-side pins.
another unrelated question, is it ok to put the left over premixed (50:1) fuel in my car (a honda crv)?

A lot of people do, but I'm sure it's not good for the Emissions System. Less damage will occur if you add it over time, say a pint to a full tank of gas. Do you have 4 stroke lawn mower? Those don't have expensive Emissions Control parts to gum up

I've a tesla version of lawn mower, :) electric. well, what is a better way to dispose of the premixed fuel? the boat came with 4 six-gallon tanks and they're all about 3/4 full.

If it isn't fit for the outboard, it certainly isn't fit for your car. Lessee, what would it cost to clean the tank, fuel pump, lines, and replace the injectors on your Honda?
