Hi all,

Working on a 97 rude 50ESL w/ remote. Can't get any spark. I know the kill switch is frozen, can't insert the lanyard now. 2 days ago I could. Can i bypass the kill switch on the motor? can I rig a kill switch if I need one? Thanks for any help.

Re: Can I bypass my Kill Switch?

One can eliminate the kill switch function simply by disconnecting the black/yellow wire that leads to it, however that sets up a dangerous scenario. If your intention is to just eliminate it temporarily as a test sequence, that's understanable BUT I strongly suggest that you replace it to keep that function operational ASAP.

If you get stopped you will get into trouble around here without a working switch. Try some contact cleaner sprayed on it, that should help loosen it up some. I wouldn't run without it. I would at least have some sort of "hot foot" or throttle control besides the normal controls if I didn't have a kill switch. Those things are VERY cheap insurance. We had someone killed last year because of no kill switch. Bypass it, troubleshoot the problem, and replace it...stay safe. :D

Re: Can I bypass my Kill Switch?

OK GUYS - Just got back from local boat repair shop. Went to buy a new starter/kill switch combo. Turns out that ever since about 1995, The kill switch lanyard actually "turns off the key" when it is pulled off. The Older style would ground out the spark plugs. New style runs just fine without the lanyard attached. Now that I'm only slightly less ignorant, I need help!

Now I have more troubleshooting to do. I bought a stator online last year, it does not have the black and yellow kill wire attached as the old one does, so I won't try to install it. I ohmed it out and it was a near perfect match anyway. 82ohms on orange pair, 40 on brown pair. no shorts to be found. I replaced the power pack last year. ran fine about 2 weeks, then no fire. Still trying to get fire. (I quit working on it during hunting season and winter).

at least i got my tilt switch replaced.

Re: Can I bypass my Kill Switch?

Hmmmm..... I'm not aware of the "since 1995 shut the key off kill switch" mechanical shutdown scenario. Anyone got any information on that?

Many years past, the first type kill switch did just that but it was superseded by the advanced Black/Yellow electronic kill circuit setup. Has technology taken a step backwards?

Anyone shed some light on this...... always willing to learn something new.

Re: Can I bypass my Kill Switch?

I'm with Joe - bypass it for testing purposes but make sure its functional for actual use. My 1972 Johnson 65hp has no kill switch and I am seriously thinking of putting one in it - just have to go buy the parts and do some homework on how to hook it up!

PS: Thanks jtexas!

Re: Can I bypass my Kill Switch?

already done the homework, no need to duplicate my effort, jay - get the aftermarket switch, connect one side to black/yellow kill wire, other side to ground, piece of cake. (I believe that's the 1972 color scheme, it does have electronic ignition, right?)

Re: Can I bypass my Kill Switch?

Well, I saw it and tested it, the key definitly turns off. It's been replaced so that is moot for me anyway.

I still have a problem though.

How do I test to see whether the problem is the stator or the power pack?

Thanks again for your help guys.
