(225 horse) Does anyone know if the gears in the lower unit are straight cut bevel gears, that can be run continuously in either direction, or are they like automotive rearend gears which "CAN" be run in reverse, but are helical cut, and designed to have optimal strength in the forward direction. Since reverse is actually used a very small percentage of the time.

its a helical cut spriral bevel gear. I guess they are capeable of transmitting power in either direction but they are not desinged to accept the thrust load of the prop. and the drive shaft bearings are not designed to accpt thrust in both directions. and no you can make one a counter rotating by useing reverse as fwd and using a left hand wheel :) :)

Allthogh I have not seen personally. I would be willing to bet. that engines produced specifically for counter rotating, have reverse cut gears, to maintain maximum strenth.

The gears are really no different. It's all in the bearings behind the gears.

Straight cut gears are not used with this unit or many other outboards since the late 60's.If you are considering making reverse the primary gear for this unit you will certainly need to consider a counter rotater gearcase as the standard is loaded to forward. There are alot of reasons for that and your application might could use a little explaination. We do'nt know what you are trying to accomplish with this project or really,WHY? Backtrolling for sturgeon? It would be cheaper to get a kicker.
