I lost a head gasket and number 6 is full of water. This is a 1975 Bayliner.I called to find what parts would cost and the machanic laughed at me when I asked about head work.He told me I was beating dead dog.And they were'nt wortha da/*^% in 75.I asked what would fit on the 280 outdrive in a newer application, But he was'nt to helpful. Any Ideas Guys?

Not much help I can give you since you have an old engine with water in it. First your problem is that you have a bad exhaust manifold and riser. The cylinder wall of your engine will have damages. It would take a new long block assembly and new manifolds. It is not cheap. I would consider it only if your boat is worth putting this much money in it. Sorry I could not give you better news but your cost would be high.<br />Gene :(

HI I think any motor that has a volvo Bellhousing will attatch to that drive You just have to compensate for gear ratio of the different size motors.

Adapters are available to couple the 280vp to ANY motor it all depends on what will fit (4,6 or 8 cyl)Pick a modern 6cyl that is readily marinized and you can't go wrong. I run a ford 302 with my 280 and its great. When I repowered with the 302 I took into account repair costs and availability of parts. A bit of homework before you chose will save headaches later.
